Corpus cavernosum
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002593
One of two columns of sponge-like erectile tissue located along the dorsal side of the penis. During sexual arousal, nerve signals cause the smooth muscle in the walls of the blood vessels and cavernous spaces to relax, allowing blood to flow in and fill the tissue, resulting in an erection. A third column of erectile tissue, the corpus spongiosum, surrounds the urethra and prevents its compression during erection.
