Ovarian follicle

A fluid-filled sac within the ovary that contains an immature egg cell, or oocyte. These structures develop through several stages, from primordial to mature (Graafian) follicles, each containing an oocyte surrounded by granulosa and theca cells. The mature follicle ruptures during ovulation to release the egg.
