Primary oocyte

A diploid germ cell in the ovary that undergoes meiosis I to produce a secondary oocyte and a polar body. These cells are present in the ovaries at birth and remain arrested in prophase I until puberty. Each primary oocyte is enclosed within a primordial follicle.
