Oogenesis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008246
The biological process of forming a mature ovum (egg cell) from a germline stem cell within the ovary. This process begins with the mitotic division of oogonia to produce primary oocytes, which then enter meiosis but arrest in prophase I until puberty. After puberty, hormonal cycles trigger the completion of meiosis I to form a secondary oocyte and a polar body, with meiosis II only completing upon fertilization.
