Oogonium

A primordial germ cell in the female reproductive system that undergoes mitotic division to produce primary oocytes. These diploid cells are present in the fetal ovary and represent the initial stage of oogenesis. In humans, oogonia proliferate extensively before birth, forming the pool of future eggs.
