Blastomere
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001369
An individual cell produced by the mitotic divisions, known as cleavage, of a fertilized egg. These cells become progressively smaller with each successive division because the total volume of the early embryo remains constant. In the initial stages, up to the eight-cell stage in humans, each blastomere is totipotent, meaning it has the potential to develop into a complete organism.
