Zygote
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012826
The initial diploid cell produced through the fusion of two haploid gametes, such as an egg and a sperm, during fertilization. This single cell contains the complete genetic material necessary to form a new organism, with half of its chromosomes contributed by each parent gamete. The zygote subsequently undergoes a series of mitotic divisions, a process known as cleavage, to develop into an embryo.
