Haploid
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005095
Describing a cell or organism that possesses a single set of unpaired chromosomes. This state is represented by the notation 'n', where n is the number of chromosomes in one complete set for a given species. In humans and most animals, gametes such as sperm and egg cells are haploid, containing 23 chromosomes, which is half the number found in diploid somatic cells.
