Hantzsch-Widman name
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005094
A systematic name for a monocyclic heterocycle with three to ten ring members, built from a prefix for each heteroatom (oxa, thia, aza and so on) followed by a stem that states the ring size and saturation, as in oxirane, thiirene, azepine or 1,3-dioxolane. Rings of six members or fewer take different stems for fully unsaturated and saturated forms, and some common rings keep retained names such as pyridine and pyrrole instead.
