Fecundation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004364

The successful fusion of a male gamete (sperm) with a female gamete (ovum) to form a zygote, initiating the development of a new individual. This process involves the penetration of the egg's outer layers by the sperm and the subsequent merging of their haploid nuclei. Fecundation restores the diploid number of chromosomes and is the primary event of sexual reproduction.
