Open circuit potential

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008248

The electrical potential difference between a working electrode and a reference electrode when no net current is flowing through the electrochemical cell. This potential is established when the rates of oxidation and reduction reactions at the electrode surface are equal. It provides information about the thermodynamic stability of species at the electrode interface under equilibrium or quasi-equilibrium conditions.
