Counter electrode
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002633
An electrode in an electrochemical cell that completes the electrical circuit and allows current to flow, without necessarily being the site of the primary analytical reaction. Its purpose is to provide a pathway for electrons to balance the reaction occurring at the working electrode. It is typically designed to have a large surface area to minimize its own polarization.
