Oocyte

An immature female germ cell that undergoes meiosis to form an ovum. Primary oocytes are arrested in prophase I of meiosis, while secondary oocytes are arrested in metaphase II until fertilization. These cells are found within the ovaries of female animals and are the precursors to mature eggs.
