Metaphase
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013278
A stage of mitosis and of both meiotic divisions in which the chromosomes line up on the equatorial plane of the cell, forming the metaphase plate, after attaching to the spindle. In mitosis and meiosis II the two sister chromatids of each chromosome attach to microtubules from opposite poles, whereas in meiosis I each member of a homologous pair attaches to one pole. The spindle assembly checkpoint verifies this alignment before anaphase begins.
