Metaplasia

The reversible replacement of one differentiated adult cell type by another differentiated adult cell type. This change often occurs in response to chronic irritation or inflammation, adapting the tissue to better withstand the environmental stress. An example is the change from columnar to squamous epithelium in the respiratory tract of smokers.
