A malignant neoplasm, or cancer, that arises from epithelial cells, which are the cells that line the internal organs and form the outer surface of the body. Carcinomas are the most common type of cancer in humans and are classified based on the specific type of epithelial tissue from which they originate. For example, adenocarcinoma originates in glandular epithelium, while squamous cell carcinoma arises from squamous epithelium.
