Graafian follicle
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004973
A large, fluid-filled, mature ovarian follicle containing a secondary oocyte, ready for ovulation. It develops from a primary follicle through several stages of growth and is characterized by a large, single antrum (cavity) filled with follicular fluid. Following the surge of luteinizing hormone, the Graafian follicle ruptures to release the oocyte, a process known as ovulation.
