Cytotrophoblast
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002847
The inner layer of the trophoblast, the outer cell layer of the blastocyst that develops into a large part of the placenta. These individual, mitotically active cells serve as stem cells for the syncytiotrophoblast, which they generate through proliferation and fusion. Cytotrophoblast cells are responsible for invading the uterine wall, anchoring the placenta, and remodeling the maternal spiral arteries to increase blood flow to the developing fetus.
