Anchoring villus

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000573

A specialized projection of the chorion, a fetal membrane, that extends into the decidua of the maternal endometrium. These villi firmly attach the placenta to the uterine wall, providing structural stability and facilitating the exchange of nutrients, gases, and waste products between the mother and the developing fetus. They are distinct from floating villi, which are involved primarily in exchange.
