Arachnoid villus
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000761
A small protrusion of the arachnoid membrane, one of the three meninges covering the central nervous system, that extends through the dura mater into the superior sagittal sinus. These structures function as one-way valves, allowing cerebrospinal fluid to exit the subarachnoid space and enter the bloodstream. Aggregations of these villi are known as arachnoid granulations and become more numerous with age.
