One of the three protective membranes that enclose the brain and spinal cord, collectively known as the meninges. These layers, from outermost to innermost, are the dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater. They provide physical protection, support blood vessels, and contain cerebrospinal fluid, which cushions the central nervous system.
