Trophoblast
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012320
The outer layer of cells of the blastocyst that provides nutrients to the embryo and develops into a large part of the placenta. Following fertilization, these cells facilitate the implantation of the embryo into the maternal endometrium. The trophoblast differentiates into an inner cytotrophoblast layer and an outer syncytiotrophoblast layer, which invades the uterine wall.
