Glial fibrillary acidic protein

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004902

An intermediate filament protein found in the cytoplasm of astrocytes and other glial cells in the central nervous system. It is a major component of the cytoskeleton in these cells, providing structural support. Elevated levels of glial fibrillary acidic protein in biological fluids are often used as a biomarker for central nervous system injury or disease.
