Neurofilament
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007874
A type of intermediate filament, approximately 10 nm in diameter, found in the cytoplasm of neurons. These protein polymers form a major component of the neuronal cytoskeleton, providing structural support to the axon and regulating its diameter. Neurofilaments are composed of three different polypeptide subunits: light (NF-L), medium (NF-M), and heavy (NF-H), which co-assemble to form the filament.
