Intermediate filament
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013203
A class of cytoskeletal protein polymers found in the cytoplasm of most animal cells. These filaments have a diameter of approximately 10 nanometers, which is intermediate between that of microtubules (about 25 nm) and microfilaments (about 7 nm). Unlike the other cytoskeletal components, their protein composition is tissue-specific, including keratins in epithelial cells and neurofilaments in neurons.
