Intermediate

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005953

A chemical species formed during a reaction that is not a reactant or a final product, but is consumed in a subsequent step of the reaction mechanism. Intermediates are often highly reactive and have a transient existence. Their detection and characterization provide insight into reaction pathways.
