Tetrahedral intermediate
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011903
A transient species formed during nucleophilic acyl substitution reactions, where a nucleophile attacks a carbonyl carbon, leading to a carbon atom that is temporarily bonded to four groups in a tetrahedral geometry. This intermediate is typically short-lived and rapidly collapses to form the product by expelling a leaving group. Its formation is a key step in reactions like ester hydrolysis.
