Diamond

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003127

An allotrope of carbon characterized by a crystal structure where each carbon atom is covalently bonded to four other carbon atoms in a tetrahedral arrangement. This sp3 hybridization results in an extremely hard material with high thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity. Natural diamonds form under high pressure and temperature conditions deep within the Earth.
