Interleukin

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005952

A group of cytokines, which are signaling proteins, produced predominantly by leukocytes that mediate communication between cells of the immune system. They regulate cell growth, differentiation, and activation during immune responses, inflammation, and hematopoiesis. The nomenclature for this group, such as IL-1, IL-2, and so on, reflects the order of their discovery, with over 40 members now identified.
