Monokine

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007549

A type of cytokine produced and secreted primarily by monocytes and macrophages in response to stimuli such as pathogens. These signaling proteins are involved in the immune response, mediating communication between cells and regulating processes like inflammation, cell growth, and differentiation. The term distinguishes these molecules from lymphokines, which are cytokines produced by lymphocytes, although this distinction is now considered less rigid as many cytokines are produced by multiple cell types.
