Endonuclease
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013069
An enzyme that cleaves the phosphodiester bonds within a polynucleotide chain, such as DNA or RNA. Unlike exonucleases, which cut from the ends of a nucleic acid strand, endonucleases can cut at specific internal sites or non-specifically within the molecule. Restriction endonucleases, a specific class, recognize and cleave DNA at particular short nucleotide sequences, making them fundamental tools in molecular cloning and DNA mapping.
