Restriction site
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010278
A short DNA sequence, usually 4 to 8 base pairs long, that a restriction enzyme recognizes and cuts at or near. Most sites recognized by type II enzymes are palindromic, reading the same 5' to 3' on both strands, as with GAATTC cut by EcoRI, but some enzymes, such as type IIS enzymes, recognize asymmetric sequences. Cutting leaves either blunt ends or short single-stranded overhangs.
