Endoenzymes

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003896

Enzymes that cleave bonds inside a polymer chain rather than at its ends, so they split large molecules into shorter fragments. Endonucleases that cut within a DNA or RNA strand, either at random or at specific base sequences, and endoamylases that attack starch in its interior are typical examples. Microbiology texts also use the word for enzymes working inside the cell that made them, in contrast to secreted exoenzymes.
