Cytochrome P450

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002833

A superfamily of heme-containing monooxygenase enzymes primarily located in the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria of cells. These enzymes catalyze the oxidation of a vast array of endogenous and exogenous compounds, including drugs, toxins, and steroids. Their name derives from the characteristic absorption maximum at 450 nm when complexed with carbon monoxide in their reduced state.
