Xenobiotic

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012737

A chemical that is foreign to an organism, meaning the organism does not make it and would not normally contain it. Drugs, pesticides, industrial pollutants and other synthetic compounds fall into this group. Organisms handle them with metabolic pathways of detoxification and excretion, such as oxidation by cytochrome P450 enzymes followed by conjugation with glucuronic acid or glutathione.
