Eukaryote
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013083
An organism whose cells contain a nucleus enclosed within a nuclear envelope, as well as other membrane-bound organelles such as mitochondria and chloroplasts. This cellular organization distinguishes eukaryotes from prokaryotes, which lack a true nucleus. Eukaryotic organisms include all animals, plants, fungi, and protists, and their complex cellular structure is a key consideration in toxicology studies assessing mechanisms of chemical action and metabolism.
