Lipid droplets

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006652

Dynamic cellular organelles composed of a neutral lipid core, primarily triacylglycerols and cholesteryl esters, surrounded by a phospholipid monolayer and associated proteins. They serve as storage sites for metabolic energy and membrane precursors within the cell. These organelles are found in the cytoplasm of nearly all eukaryotic cells and play roles in lipid metabolism and cellular signaling.
