Lipid A
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006651
A phosphorylated glucosamine disaccharide that forms the hydrophobic anchor of lipopolysaccharides (LPS), a major component of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. It is responsible for most of the endotoxic activity of LPS, triggering strong immune responses in hosts. Its structure varies among bacterial species.
