Endotoxin
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003907
A toxic component of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, primarily composed of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). It is released upon bacterial cell lysis and can trigger a strong inflammatory response in a host organism. Exposure to endotoxins can lead to fever, shock, and organ damage, with concentrations as low as 0.1 ng/mL capable of inducing pyrogenic effects.
