Acrosome
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000159
A cap-like organelle derived from the Golgi apparatus that covers the anterior portion of the head of a spermatozoon. It contains a variety of hydrolytic enzymes, including hyaluronidase and acrosin, which are necessary for fertilization. The release of these enzymes during the acrosome reaction breaks down the outer layers of the ovum, permitting the sperm to penetrate and fuse with the egg.
