Acrosome reaction
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000160
An exocytotic process that occurs when a spermatozoon comes into contact with an egg during fertilization. The reaction involves the fusion of the sperm's plasma membrane with the outer acrosomal membrane, releasing the contents of the acrosome. This release of hydrolytic enzymes, such as acrosin, digests a path through the zona pellucida, the egg's protective outer layer.
