Branching plane
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001484
At a conical intersection, the two-dimensional subspace of nuclear coordinates defined by the gradient difference vector together with the interstate coupling vector. Displacement along either vector lifts the degeneracy of the two electronic states to first order, producing the double-cone shape of the intersection. Displacements in the remaining 3N-8 internal coordinates, orthogonal to this plane, preserve the degeneracy and trace out the intersection seam.
