Branching index

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001483

A parameter, commonly symbolised g, that quantifies the degree of branching in a polymer. It is the quotient of the coil's mean-square radius of gyration for a branched chain and for a linear chain having the same molar mass. Branching makes the coil more compact, so g falls below 1 and decreases as branching increases.
