Degenerate chain branching

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002923

A type of chain reaction where the branching step, which increases the number of chain carriers, involves an intermediate product rather than the initial reactants. This intermediate product accumulates during the reaction, leading to a delayed but rapid acceleration of the overall reaction rate. Such reactions often exhibit an induction period followed by an explosive increase in reaction velocity.
