Degenerate rearrangement
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002925
A molecular rearrangement where the product is chemically identical to the starting material, meaning the structure and connectivity of the atoms are indistinguishable. This type of rearrangement is detected by isotopic labeling or dynamic nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. An example is the Cope rearrangement of bullvalene, where all carbon atoms are equivalent.
