Polytopal rearrangement

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009248

A dynamic process in which the ligands surrounding a central atom in a polyhedral molecule or ion change their relative positions without breaking any bonds between the central atom and the ligands. This rearrangement results in an isomer that has the same connectivity but a different spatial arrangement of ligands. The Berry pseudorotation is a common example observed in trigonal bipyramidal complexes.
