Cage
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001564
A transient aggregate of molecules, often solvent molecules, that surrounds a pair of reactive species in solution. This confinement can influence the outcome of a chemical reaction by hindering the escape of reaction intermediates or products. The cage effect describes how such confinement can increase the probability of reaction between species within the cage.
