Site splitting
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010917
A splitting of a spectral band into two or more components in a crystal, where the same transition of the free gas-phase molecule gives a single band. It is attributed either to the molecule sitting at a lattice position with lower symmetry than the free molecule has, which lifts a degeneracy, or to the presence of several inequivalent kinds of lattice site in the crystal. The related effect arising from coupling between molecules within the unit cell is called factor group splitting.
