Parafollicular cell

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008442

A neuroendocrine cell type found in the thyroid gland, distinct from the follicular cells that produce thyroid hormones. These cells, also known as C cells, are responsible for secreting calcitonin, a hormone involved in calcium homeostasis. Calcitonin acts to lower blood calcium levels by inhibiting osteoclast activity.
