Hypophysectomy

The surgical removal of the pituitary gland, a small endocrine gland located at the base of the brain. This procedure is performed to treat certain pituitary tumors or to alleviate symptoms of hormone overproduction. It results in the loss of pituitary hormone secretion, requiring lifelong hormone replacement therapy.
